Communication
Effective Communication
Communication can only be effective if it is received and understood by the recipient. For each person certain communication strategies are more effective than others. This section identifies some of the key strategies which will lead to effective communication with me. Identify the most important statements and make them available to colleagues.
Strategies for communicating with me:
● Be well structured and organised.
● Agree with him wherever possible.
● Acknowledge your understanding of his ideals and values, although they may be different.
● Leave personalities out of the discussion.
● Provide facts and figures.
● Match his pace in presenting to him.
● Take responsibility for your own actions and errors.
● Ask what he thinks, not how he feels.
● Be thoroughly prepared.
● Be clear about expectations and timescales.
● Be practical and logical.
● Let him know he is in control.
Barriers to Effective Communication
Certain strategies will be less effective when communicating with me. Some of the things to be avoided are listed below. This information can be used to develop powerful, effective and mutually acceptable communication strategies.
When communicating with me, DO NOT:
● Criticise ideas or take issues with them.
● Be dull, dour or redundant.
● Invade my privacy.
● Forget to balance interaction with time for reflection.
● Appear timid or ineffective.
● Be flippant, inconsistent, fanciful or ostentatious.
● Go to a meeting with him without adequate facts and figures.
● Try to hoodwink or mislead.
● Be too informal or waste time on social trivia.
● Ramble or become emotional.
● Tell me what to do or how to do it.
● Expect an immediate positive reaction.
